Who I Am
I am Carolyn Comas (she/her). I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Certified Supervisor.
What I Do
My passion is helping people who struggle with their relationship with food, body image and self. My goal is to help my clients emancipate themselves from destructive thoughts and behaviors and create a more balanced outlook on life. Additionally, I practice from an anti-diet and Health At Every Size(R) perspective. I base my treatment on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy while also incorporating Dialectical Behavioral Therapy skills and motivational interviewing. I help people to challenge automatic negative thoughts, decrease anxiety, and help obtain a more balanced and sustainable attitude.
As part of the EDTLA team, I am honored to be able to help people with all types of eating disorders and support them in their recovery. I have both lived experience of being in recovery from an eating disorder and living in a larger body that I believe helps create an empathetic and safe space for all of my clients. I firmly believe in starting where the client is and guiding them onto a successful path of recovery. In addition, I have experience working with clients who struggle with depression, grief, anxiety, and going through life transitions.
As a certified eating disorder specialist and clinical supervisor at EDTLA, I supervise and mentor more junior therapists. I also serve as certification chair for the International Association for Eating Disorder Professionals (iaedp) Los Angeles chapter. Over the past years, I have had extensive training in the “newest eating disorder” - ARFID. I co-facilitate a parent ARFID support group and currently sit on the board of the ARFID Collaborative.
More About Me
I received my Master's in Social Work degree from Adelphi University in New York. Following that, I worked in both residential and partial hospitalization facilities for adolescents and adults with eating disorders and other comorbid diagnoses.
I am a native New Yorker. Outside of work, I am an adult competitive figure skater and was an ice skating coach for many years. I love emo-punk music, my corgi, and three cats.
How I Help
I strive to offer my clients the tools to tap into their own inner strengths to help cultivate growth and modify negative thoughts and behaviors. My approach stems from empathy and compassion.
